Question 1

When is the best time to visit Shanghai?

Accepted Answer

Autumn (late September to November) is generally pleasant, with mild temperatures and little rain. Summers are hot and humid, and winters can be damp and cold, so spring and fall are the most comfortable for exploring the city.

Question 2

How easy is it to get around Shanghai using public transport?

Accepted Answer

Shanghai's Metro is efficient, extensive, and easy to navigate with English signage. Get a Shanghai Public Transportation Card for convenience—it works on the metro, buses, and even ferries. Major attractions are well-connected, and many areas like the Bund and French Concession are walkable.

Question 3

Do I need cash in Shanghai, or can I use cards and apps?

Accepted Answer

Cash is less common these days; most locals use Alipay or WeChat Pay, even for small purchases. Foreign cards are accepted in some big hotels and malls but often not in smaller shops, taxis, or street food stalls. It's smart to have some yuan in cash for places that don't take cards or apps.

Question 4

Is there a tipping culture or any etiquette I should know?

Accepted Answer

Tipping is not customary in Shanghai and can even be refused in taxis and restaurants. Dress is generally casual, but locals tend to dress neatly in the city. In temples, modest clothing is appreciated.

Question 5

Is Shanghai safe for tourists? Any common scams or mistakes?

Accepted Answer

Shanghai is considered very safe, including at night. Watch out for the common 'tea house scam'—avoid following strangers who invite you to bars or tea ceremonies. Keep an eye on your belongings in crowded places like Nanjing Road.

Question 6

What surprises first-time visitors about Shanghai?

Accepted Answer

The futuristic skyline of Pudong and the colonial architecture of the Bund coexist right across the river. Visitors are often surprised by how international, modern, and clean the city feels, yet traditional life continues in the narrow alleys (longtangs) just off the main streets.

Question 7

What area should I stay in and what are they like?

Accepted Answer

Huangpu (People’s Square/Bund) is central and good for sightseeing. The French Concession is leafy, stylish, and full of cafes—ideal for travelers who like a laid-back vibe. Pudong is business-focused and suits those attending events at the Expo Centre or who want luxury hotels by the skyscrapers.

Question 8

What local food should I try in Shanghai?

Accepted Answer

Try xiaolongbao (soup dumplings), shengjian mantou (fried pork buns), and scallion oil noodles. Local snacks are everywhere, especially around Yuyuan Garden and the old city. Shanghainese cuisine is often sweeter and lighter than food in other parts of China.

Question 9

What is Shanghai famous for?

Accepted Answer

It's known for its glitzy skyline—especially the Oriental Pearl Tower and Shanghai Tower—and its blend of historic (The Bund) and ultra-modern districts. Shanghai is also one of China’s main fashion, arts, and food cities.

Question 10

How many days do I really need in Shanghai?

Accepted Answer

You can see core sights in two or three days: the Bund, French Concession, Nanjing Road, and Yu Garden. With four or more days, you can dive deeper into art districts, water towns nearby, or food scenes.

Question 11

How do I get from Pudong International Airport to the city center?

Accepted Answer

You can take the Maglev train to Longyang Road and then transfer to the metro for central hotels. Taxis and airport shuttles are available and, depending on traffic and where you're staying, can take significantly longer than the train.
