Pantheon

THE ONE THING

Rome at First Light

The same squares, zero crowd — wake up early to truly experience Rome.

The most common complaint in Rome is the crowds. Struggling to find a spot to take a photo in front of the Trevi Fountain, standing shoulder to shoulder inside the Pantheon, a tour group on every square. There is a solution, and it doesn't require tickets or money: wake up early.

What Does Early Mean

Seven in the morning. Even eight is too late. At this hour, Rome's center is almost deserted; cafes are starting to open, vans are unloading goods, squares are being swept. The same stones, the same light, the same fountain — but you're the only one there.

A Route

Start at the Pantheon (even looking from the outside is different at this hour), walk to Piazza Navona, then head down to Campo de' Fiori. It takes about twenty minutes in total, and these three spots remain crowd-free all day.

Breakfast

Standing up, enter a bar for an espresso and a cornetto. In Italy, breakfast is not a drawn-out ritual; it's over at the counter in two minutes, and it's cheaper too.

A Small Note

As the center fills up around noon, change direction: head to Trastevere or the Aventine Hill, which stay quiet in the afternoon. Don't compete with the crowds, shift your timing.
