A walk along the Seine

The list of things to do in Paris is long, and most people work through it like a task: museum, tower, church, queue, ticket. But the best of the city lives in the gaps between those — down by the river, walking with nowhere to be.

The route

Start from the island where Notre-Dame stands and walk west, towards the Louvre. The left bank is quieter, the right bank livelier; cross at whichever bridge you like. Do not set a destination — you will stop at every bridge anyway.

When

Late afternoon. As the light drops the stone facades warm up and the steps down to the water fill: people sitting and watching the river, a bottle of wine, sometimes a musician. This is the hour when Paris is simply being itself.

Go down to the water

The upper level of the embankment is a road. The point is the lower level, right by the water. The staircases are beside the bridge piers and easy to walk past. Down there the traffic noise stops.

One small note

The quays on the two islands — Île de la Cité and Île Saint-Louis — are the narrowest and quietest stretches. If the crowds have worn you out, end the walk there.
