THE ONE THING
Ferry on the Bosphorus
The cheapest and most beautiful way to see the city from both continents at once — a ferry ticket.
Most first‑time visitors to Istanbul hop on the Bosphorus tour boats. Yet the city’s own ferries run on the same water, offer the same view, and do it for far less money and with far fewer crowds. And you’re surrounded not by tourists but by commuters – that’s the real difference.
Why take the ferry
Istanbul looks exhausting from the ground, with its traffic, steep hills and endless crowds. Seen from the water, however, the reason the city rose here becomes crystal clear: hills on both shores, a waterway between them, a silhouette on every rise. A twenty‑minute ride tells you what days of walking could never reveal.
How
The lines linking Eminönü, Karaköy, Beşiktaş and Üsküdar run all day. Get an Istanbulkart, swipe through the gate and hop on the first departing ferry. Don’t worry about choosing a route — every line that crosses the Bosphorus is beautiful.
Where to sit
On the deck, at the back. The interior is heated and comfortable, but looking out through glass isn’t the same. The wind is strong; dress one layer warmer.
Small note
The late‑afternoon line is the best: at the return hour the ferries are packed, gulls cling to you, and the sunset sinks behind the Historic Peninsula. Grab a tea from a tea kiosk – nobody is in a hurry.
