A ferry across the Bosphorus
The cheapest and best way to see Istanbul from two continents at once.
Most first-time visitors book a Bosphorus cruise. But the city's own commuter ferries cross the same water, with the same view, for a fraction of the price and a fraction of the crowd. Better still, the people beside you are not tourists — they are Istanbulites on their way to work. That is the difference.
Why the ferry
From land Istanbul is tiring: traffic, hills, crowds. From the water it makes immediate sense — hills on both shores, a waterway between them, a silhouette on every ridge. A twenty-minute crossing explains what days of walking will not.
How
Lines run all day between Eminönü, Karaköy, Beşiktaş and Üsküdar. Get an Istanbulkart, tap through and board whichever ferry leaves first. Do not agonise over the route — every crossing of the Bosphorus is a good one.
Where to sit
On deck, at the back. The interior is heated and comfortable, but looking through glass is not the same thing. It is windier than you expect; bring a layer.
One small note
Late afternoon is best. The ferries fill with people heading home, gulls follow the boat, and the sun drops behind the old city. Buy a glass of tea from the counter on board. Nobody is hurrying you.
