A balloon at first light
Lift off before the valleys are lit — Cappadocia only makes sense from above.
From the ground in Cappadocia you see the fairy chimneys. From the air you see why they are there: the valleys, the beds of rock, a surface carved by wind and water over millions of years. That is why a balloon flight is not a touristic habit here but the one experience that explains the place.
Why dawn
Flights start before sunrise, and the reason is wind rather than scenery: the first hours of the morning are the calmest air of the day. The side effect is the famous one — dozens of balloons rising together as the sky lightens.
What to know
Flights depend entirely on weather and are cancelled often. Planning a single night in Cappadocia around a balloon ride is risky; give it two nights, ideally three. If it is called off, you simply try again the next morning.
If you cannot fly
Walking up onto the ridges of Red Valley or Pigeon Valley at sunrise is the next best thing. The balloons still rise in front of you — and you see them against the landscape rather than from inside it.
One small note
The basket is warm, but waiting on the ground is not. Bring a jacket; the valley floor stays cold until the light is properly up.
