As you wander along the Amalfi Coast, a sea‑bound surprise awaits. A small boat departing from Marina Grande will take you to the Emerald Grotto. The cavern takes its name from the emerald hue of its waters. Missing this trip means first‑timers lose the chance to see a different side of the sea.

Journey to the Grotto by Boat

As you board the boat at the Marina Grande pier, you feel the gentle lapping of waves against the hull. The vessel weaves through the narrow inlet of the harbor, threading its way among the cliffs. Approaching the entrance, a massive arch frames the grotto like a historic monument. Light shimmering on the water accentuates the emerald tone even more. The boat’s captain pulls out an old map indicating the route and offers visitors a brief narration.

Moments Inside the Grotto

When the boat comes to a halt and you step inside, the chill of the water greets your feet. The emerald waters glow like a natural mirror, illuminating the walls. A narrow beam of light stretches into the cavern’s depths, revealing the colors of the submerged stones. As the boat gently rocks, you hear the soft, melodic sounds of the water. At the far end of the grotto, a halo of light forms beneath the surface and the boat drifts to a stop, providing photographers with a perfect shot.
